Coffee has historically been a blemish in the history of the Maya in Guatemala. They faced a prolonged crisis for centuries, starting from the Spanish conquest, which disrupted the indigenous lifestyle here. During the colonial period until Central America gained independence in 1823, various laws transformed traditional lands of the Maya into large estates, where indigenous people were forced into slavery to work on coffee plantations—or choose to leave.
Huehuetenango is known as one of the three non-volcanic regions of Guatemala, and it also has a higher-than-average growing altitude that allows coffee plants to absorb more nutrients, making it one of the best coffee-growing areas. The geographical conditions of Huehuetenango contribute to producing unique coffees with distinct acidity and fruity flavors.
Misty Mountain comes from the La Morena program in Guatemala, launched in 2016 to open markets for female farmers. Today, over 800 women from Huehuetenango and Baja Verapaz contribute to producing this excellent Guatemalan coffee.
