Cascara Tea: Origins and Unique Qualities
“Cascara,” a word derived from Spanish, means “husk” or “peel.” Also known as coffee cherry tea, it has become popular in coffeehouses across Europe and America. From the name alone, how much can you guess about this unique tea?
Is Cascara Tea Made from Coffee Beans?
Although it’s called coffee cherry tea, it’s not made from coffee beans. Instead, it’s made from the dried husks of coffee cherries. Cascara should not be confused with Cascara Sagrada, a plant commonly used as a supplement. After coffee cherries are harvested, the husks are collected to create cascara tea.

What Nutrients Does Cascara Tea Contain?
Surprisingly, coffee husks are rich in nutrients. Cascara contains vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, and fatty acids. It also provides protein, caffeine, and beneficial bioactive compounds like polyphenols. In fact, 100 grams of cascara contains as much potassium as six bananas, as much protein as an egg, and includes Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, Omega-3, and Omega-6.
One common question about cascara is, “Does it contain caffeine?” Yes, it does, although less than roasted coffee. When brewed hot, cascara tea is calming and can enhance mental clarity. When cold-brewed, it offers a light, refreshing experience, making it ideal for those seeking health benefits beyond caffeine.
