Gesha is grown in volcanic slopes with perfect climate and soil conditions for coffee cultivation. It offers a gentle flavor combined with the sweetness and nuttiness of beans from the beautiful Central American lands. However, Gesha is definitely different from any coffee you have ever tried.
Why is this type of bean so expensive?
When it comes to coffee sold for $9 a cup in Panama, $18 in New York, and even $68 in Dubai, what do you think this coffee would be like? Is it an exceptional flavor explosion, an elaborate processing method, or is it so rare that it commands a high price?
The answer is all three!
Gesha, grown in volcanic slopes with perfect climate and soil conditions for coffee, offers a gentle flavor with the sweetness and nuttiness of beans from beautiful Central America. However, Gesha is certainly different from any coffee you have ever tasted. It has a smooth, delicate fruity flavor akin to tea, with a refined sweetness paired with mild acidity, featuring bright, sparkling notes of various fruits like berries, citrus, mango, papaya, peach, pineapple, guava, and jasmine. The finish is long and characteristic, reminiscent of orange peel or bergamot oil. It is often described as similar to Earl Grey tea, creating a harmonious and memorable experience for the taster.
The Unique Flavor of Gesha from Different Regions
Interestingly, Gesha grown in each region has its unique characteristics. Gesha from Panama offers a gentle, smooth fruity flavor with low acidity and bitterness. Gesha from Ethiopia or Costa Rica will captivate you with notes of vanilla, honey, lavender, and a sweet, mildly tart aftertaste of green apple.
Gesha cultivation requires meeting very specific farming conditions. The timing of the harvest is also carefully calculated. That’s why this has become the most expensive coffee variety in the world, consistently achieving the highest scores, often above 90 points according to the Specialty Coffee Association’s grading system.
